Museum the Witches Weighhouse
Much of Oudewater's city centre is on the register of monuments. The Witches Weighhouse is located in the historic centre. The historical building now serves as a museum. Visitors can see an audiovisual presentation and exhibition about witchhunting and can be weight on the original scales.
Visitors from all over the world visit for almost a hundred years the Witches Weighouse in Oudewater. They take place on the original scales and receive a certificate. In the building already in the 17th century this weighing took place.
These days it was a case of life or death: people were accused of witchcraft. Many men and women ended up on the pyre. The City of Oudewater was the only city in Europe that received the privilage for a fair weighing process by Emperor Karel V. Nobody was ever convicted as a witch.
In the museum compelling audiovisual presentations, an exhibition and of course the original balance tell the story of the witch persecutions and the role of Weighhouse.
For children it's a museum where they can play and learn.
Do you know whether you are a witch or too light for flying on a broomstick? Find out yourself if you are a witch or not and take place on the original scales dating from 1482. Who knows you also receive the 'Certificaet of Weginghe'!
